Which AI model is best for voice agents?
No AI model is best for every voice agent. Choose a model that completes your actual calls reliably within your response-time and cost requirements. Test the language, caller corrections, tool actions and failure cases you expect, then compare completed outcomes rather than a polished demo or a general benchmark. The conversational model, speech recognition, voice generation and orchestration all affect the result, so evaluate the complete configuration before choosing a winner.
Separate the model from the voice and the platform
In a chained voice agent, speech recognition turns audio into text, a model and workflow decide what to do, and text-to-speech generates the voice. A speech-to-speech architecture handles spoken interaction differently. A pleasant voice therefore does not prove that the system will select the right tool or preserve a corrected address. Architecture options also depend on the platform: a provider offering an audio model does not establish that it is selectable inside every voice-agent product. OpenAI: Voice agents
Start with the job your caller needs done
For an appointment setter, write down what a successful booking requires: the right customer, service, date, time and confirmed calendar record. For a receptionist, define which questions it may answer and which requests need a person. Make required languages, approved data handling and supported tool actions entry requirements. Only compare configurations that meet them. This stops an attractive demo from winning a task it cannot actually perform.
Give every candidate the same test calls
Use a stable set of scenarios and scoring rules. An illustrative set could include a straightforward enquiry, an address corrected mid-call, an unavailable appointment, an unsupported service request and a calendar error. Include realistic accents and background conditions for your audience. Check the saved business record as well as what the agent says. A spoken claim that a booking succeeded is not evidence that the booking exists. Repeat scenarios rather than deciding from one successful call. OpenAI: GPT-Live evaluation guide
Score reliability before choosing the cheaper configuration
Decide which errors are unacceptable before reviewing results. An incorrect appointment or invented business policy should not be averaged away by fluent answers. Once candidates meet your required standard, compare audible response delay, call length, actual billable usage and the time needed to fix errors. Keep the task, knowledge, tools, routing and test conditions comparable. If an architecture forces other components to change, report that you compared complete configurations rather than attributing the result to one model alone.
Choose a winner for one workflow, not for every client
A configuration that fits short qualification calls may not suit complex support. Record the configuration, test date, pass criteria and unresolved failures for each client workflow. Recheck the baseline when changing instructions, models or connected tools. Keep the prior working setup documented where possible, so a change has a known comparison point. Choose the configuration that meets this workflow’s pass criteria at an acceptable total cost. OpenAI: Prompt engineering
